At this point, you have probably heard our big news- that we have been accepted to the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe. The International Folk Art Market is a world renowned event celebrating traditional art from around the world. The event is highly competitive and even having been accepted speaks to the women’s incredible skills as artisans. Just to give you an idea, there were over 500 applicants from around the world for 130 booth spaces. Needless to say, this is a high compliment towards the women’s work!

Another reason that we are excited about this opportunity is that the profits from this event will be reinvested into our sales program, allowing us to expand our sales reach. One area of our sales program we plan to expand is our wholesale program, which is a wonderful way to keep a steady and consistent stream of work coming into the prison.

Although we are thrilled to be participating in this fair (and to give the women SO MUCH work), events like these cost money. As a small non-profit we do not have the start up money to participate in an event this size. Enter Indiegogo. Next week, we will be launching an Indiegogo campaign to help us raise money to cover the cost of the event.

Our campaign goal is $10,000 and 60% of that goes directly to the women through our order! 25% will go towards the cost of the event itself, including volunteer staff travel expenses and booth fees. 10% will go into shipping and customs, and 5% will be used to support the campaign fees.

Keep an eye out next week for our launch! And, if you have fallen in love with the metal stamped jewelry from our class this trip, you will have a chance to score one as a backer of our campaign!

Thank you to everyone who helped make Ruraq Maki’s 4th annual auction fundraiser such a resounding success! Your participation helped us exceed our goal of raising $3,000. This will enable us to provide a week-long business development class in the prison, alongside an advanced jewelry-making class in Bolivia.

This incredible event would not have been possible without the support of eBay, our online auction platform, Bluesky, our auction management system, and the fabulous auction donors. Highlighting our auction catalogue on eBay made for animated bidding towards the end of the auction and we had a ten-fold increase in participation of our fundraiser.

Even if you didn’t win an item, your bidding helped increase the overall price of an item and encouraged others to bid. We are so grateful for everyone who participated in the event by bidding and sharing the event with others.

Missed the bidding action? You can still make an online donation or participate in our Second Chance Auction, where we list all unsold items for a lower starting bid. The Second Chance Auction will be live shortly.

Ruraq Maki also thanks the generous organizations and individuals who have contributed to the auction. We wholeheartedly recommend these community-minded businesses as choices for your patronage.

Join us next Friday, June 5th to Monday, June 15th for 10 days of animated bidding via eBay. Getaway packages, fitness and spa services, art and theater, wine tasting packages, and more will be on offer from San Francisco, Bay Area, and national businesses. Worth over $6,000, guests will have a busy week trying to peruse the hundreds of items up for bid. Bookmark your favorite items from the auction catalogue.

The proceeds of the fundraiser will support the Yanamilla Prison Project and Manos Independientes, allowing us to broaden our educational programs. This year’s event will enable us to provide a week-long business development class in the prison, alongside a leather-working class, and an advanced jewelry-making class in Bolivia.

Please note, to bid in our auction you will need an Ebay account. Create a new Ebay account or reset your password.

“Last year I was overwhelmed by how many auction items I wanted to bid on! My favorite winning was an awesome gift certificate to yoga classes that I got for a fraction of the price. It makes me feel good that the money goes to these women in need and I got something I wanted too.” said Serena Lo, our volunteeer from last year who spent three months working on solicitations, item write ups, and creating the cohesive visual element to our catalogue.

The fundraiser in 2014 helped Ruraq Maki present 8 workshop series to women and teenage girls in Peru and Bolivia. We were able to conduct in-depth interviews with the women in the Yanamilla Prison, and develop a new line of products for them to sell, providing a much-needed income source. In the past, our auction has also helped us launch the leather working class, specialized jewelry making workshops, purchased specialized equipment for the women, and develop some of our best selling items.
